INSTITUTE FOR DRUG AND ALCOHOL STUDIES
The Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies was established at VCU in 1993 to promote excellence in research and education on substance abuse. The institute’s research and training agenda spans the continuum from basic, laboratory research to community-based treatment effectiveness studies and policy analyses.
More than 50 faculty members from 11 departments are affiliated with the institute, enabling a multidisciplinary approach to addressing complex problems associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. IDAS Director F. Gerard Moeller, M.D., is also the Wright Center director.
VCU ranked ninth nationally in funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in fiscal year 2017. It is the highest-ranked institution in Virginia in terms of addiction-focused research funding from the National Institutes of Health.
